East Bay spots with buzz: Where to eat, shop, hang out, and catch a show in Oakland

Elevated Southern food at Brown Sugar Kitchen
Meredith May, The SF Chronicle
Nobody seems to mind waiting an hour on Saturday mornings for fried chicken and waffles at Brown Sugar Kitchen in West Oakland, where French-trained chef Tanya Holland fuses lessons learned in her grandmother's southern kitchen with skills honed at Bobby Flay's Mesa Grill in Manhattan, Le Theatre in Berkeley and appearances on the Food Network.

Shopping with Brad Ford with Oakland's Hiroko Kurihara Designs
Tim McKeough, TheNew York Times
Mr. Ford, 41, who does mostly residential interiors, was named one of the 20 young designers to watch in the March issue of Traditional Home magazine, now on newsstands. It calls his work "timeless while seriously au courant."

Oakland's Grand Tavern a warm spot to sip away bad weather
Angela Woodall, The Oakland Tribune
The Grand Tavern moved in about eight months ago. The owner, Temoor Noor, recruited his mother Kay Amir, sister Jasmin Noor and a silent partner to help run the neighborhood tavern. A former urban planner, Noor painstakingly restored the Victorian-era house from its previous service as Seņor Nero's after spending nearly three years searching for a recipe for "how people like to hang out."

Making a Healthy Lunch, and Making It a Cause
Daniel Weintrob, The New York Times
Between them, Kristin Richmond and Kirsten Tobey have worked on Wall Street, traveled the world and taught school from East Africa to Ecuador. Now they make lunch for a living.

A Bay Area Star Worth the Sparkle
Raymond Sokolov, The Wall Street Journal
Michelin-anointed Commis, in Oakland, is stirringly imaginative; in San Francisco, a hit and a miss.

Chop Bar is a treat in Jack London Square
Carol Ness, The San Francisco Chronicle
Chop Bar's name comes from the roadhouses/community hangouts of West Africa, and it's perfect for this DIY cafe, which opened four months ago in the converted industrial space that briefly housed Mono, in Oakland's Jack London Square.
